NB-IoT and LTE-M are mobile IoT technologies for devices that transmit little data, need to operate for a long time on battery power, and require a reliable connection in locations where regular mobile coverage is not always optimal. Examples include smart meters, sensors, alarms, trackers, technical installations, and equipment in basements, wells, outdoor areas, or industrial environments.

Range, battery and roaming

The actual battery life always depends on the application. Factors such as location coverage, amount of data transmitted, frequency of measurements, GPS usage, temperature, firmware, power design, and the number of network registrations have a major impact on actual consumption.
NB-IoT typically has a slight advantage in deep indoor range and very low power consumption. LTE-M, on the other hand, offers better support for mobility, higher data speeds, and interactive communication. Therefore, NB-IoT can be a strong option for devices in basements, meter cabinets, or underground technical rooms; for mobile assets and applications involving alarm response, LTE-M is often the better choice.
According to its own information, A1 Digital supports 2G, 3G, 4G/LTE, 5G, LTE-M, and NB-IoT within its IoT connectivity portfolio. However, the availability of NB-IoT, LTE-M, and roaming varies by country, network, and device. Therefore, always check in advance whether your target areas and the modem chipset used support the desired technology.

Choose NB-IoT when your device is stationary, transmits small amounts of data, requires maximum battery life, and needs to function in a difficult indoor or underground location. Choose LTE-M when your device moves, needs to respond faster, transmits data more frequently, needs to receive firmware updates, or may require a voice/VoLTE function.
